Note: This isn't a reference to any potential tournaments on these forums. And it isn't about "ITEMS/NO ITEMS" debate.
Basically, I had some ideas in my head and I think this is the best place to put them down. If you have your own feel free to share. One restriction would be something would spark an item debate that will derail this thread. That would include: Going out your way to put emphasis on banning items, going out your way to put emphasis on not banning items, calling someone a tourneyfag, etc etc. One that is perfectly is okay is putting restrictions on actions you can do with items(for example: infinite paperfan smacks). Another would be banning only specific types of items. tl;dr: Just don't mention items at all if you don't think they should be used. As for my entry(s): *Yellow/Red Card System: If you do something during a match that would be considered as an "offense" it would be idea for you stop as soon as possible. Continuing to do so gets you a Red Card(disqualified/ban/etc). As you might imagine, doing another Yellow Card offense while already possessing one gets you a Red Card. Yellow Cards would expire based on the format(after the tournament is finished, if it's a league than maybe after x number of games). An ideal example of this system would be an infinite-grab(think only King Dedede is able to do this as of now) and wall-induced infinites which I'm about to talk about now. *Infinites: Rather than cutting all wall-based stages in the game, I rather just see to it that abusers are punished. There are a ton of infinites in this game(many A attacks against walls for example). What would be allowed is chaingrabs(or attack like it really) that are A) escapable(and not insanely hard to do so) and/or B) move in one direction which will lead to an end by the time they hit edge of the stage. As you might know, King Dedede is able to infinite grab 3-4 characters without moving. This is not his famous chain-grab, but rather Mario, Samus, and one or two others I forget as of now being trapped forever by a Dedede who hits grab before they can react at all. To along with the Yellow/Red card system, after a few seconds or repeats of an infinite would be a Yellow Card. Even longer would be a Red Card. *King Dedede: Referring to this character as "D3" or referencing the comedy of "Carlos Mencia" will result in both a permaban of "Competitive play" and death by stoning. |

I think the redcard system is pretty good but it kinda relies on people being honest. Though I don't see many people lying if someone does commit an offense I see it as one persons word vs anothers unless there's someone else spectating.

Was playing some F-Zero last night and it got me thinking that if you wanted to do Free For Alls and not have it be a gay "only the winner continues", you could probably go with like a point system for how each person places, then mix it up so there's no elimination so people who might fuck up their first round could come back to win it later.
Also, boost power. |

I also foresee controller choice being very important. This is going to be a big problem for online tournaments. Controllers without a "C-stick" will be a big disadvantage especially with this new "B-stick" thing running about.

It's a lot harder to do without a c-stick. Also, c-stick is a pretty big advantage when it comes to smashing and aerials(kind of difficult to make sure you don't fast fall a dair when you don't want to). I see the difference being only a little more passive than PC vs console FPS. It's a bigger threat to "balanced play" than stages or items could ever be really since it effects gameplay at its very core.
I could see Classic vs GCN being a fair match up(though GCN's c-stick has to be centered to full register at times), or at least fairer in comparison to wiimote+nunchuck. I don't really see solo wiimote getting used at all. Also, I'm not a Ice Climber user, but apparently c-stick plays a role in some combos with them? |
