Default So I got a letter from the DMCA

Long story short they traced a tracker file that was originally hosted on Piratebay and Universal wants a reply about action that I've taken to resolve the problem. Knowing theres alot of people who do file sharing here, I'm interested to know if anyone knows exactly what kind of reply they're looking for.

The obvious would be to answer that its been deleted but that kinda leaves me defenseless I'd imagine because that's probably as close to an admission they'd get. Soo, how beyond the obvious how should I reply?

To whom it may concern,

There appears to be a glitch in your legal department. I would venture to guess that when you purchased the door plaque for your legal office building, there may have been a mix up in shipments. The sign on the building should read "Universal Legal Department" and not "World Privacy Police." I'm sure this was an honest mistake and I hope I have been helpful in pointing out this error. Hopefully the issue will be resolved before anyone gets the wrong idea about what their job is!

Sincerely,
Guy on the internet.

Yeah I'm not exactly fond of the letter considering the material in question was an episode of Knight Rider(lol) which is already available on NBC's website. Basically they want me to stop uploading which I did a few days ago anyway. These law suits and threatening letters are so silly, especially when its for something like this.

I'd say alleya's letter is about all you need.

edit: also, i think the main contention is that they aren't getting any kickbacks from it being pirated, but they get at least some sort of financial incentive if you watch it on their site

Well I had wanted to see the episode the next day and it wasn't on NBC's site so I just downloaded it and deleted it later on, keep in mind this only the first time I've gotten a letter like this but they are asking very firmly for some reply to their email.

You got a letter from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act?

If I remember correctly, DMCA letter usually is only a cease and desist order. If so, stop file sharing.

Otherwise, you should wait it out unless there's a definitive deadline spelled out on the letter for you to respond, because Harvard law school and one of its most renown law professor Charles Nesson are suing RIAA regarding the unconstitutional nature of its litigation method.

The complaint was addressed to my ISP, but they sent me a copy of the DMCA complaint along with a letter from the ISP saying I was sharing copyrighted material and would need to stop.

You should check out Tor. You will never be bothered again no matter how much you download.

Tor: anonymity online

Here's a guide to encrypt your bittorrent traffic, including bitcomet, utorrent, and azureus

I can get all my tv torrents from eztv, EZTV - TV Torrents Online (eztvefnet.org is now eztv.it), torrents usually show up about 30mins-1hour after it is shown on tv.

never have any problem, but then again, I don't watch knight rider.

http://www.torproject.org/download.html.en it's up.

While tor grants you anonymity, it does slow down your connection. So use it at your own discretion.

i got one of these a couple weeks ago... basically they gave me a form to fill out stating what i did... it had options like "yes ive complied and deleted teh material", and other things like i dont believe I was doing anything wrong, and even one that said "no i did not comply.", i of course said "yes i complied and deleted teh offending material off my pc" since it was never on my PC in the first place (but on my NAS) it wasnt really a lie was it?

Dear Sir or Madam:

Please be advised that NBC Universal and/or its subsidiary and affiliated companies (collectively, NBC Universal) are the owners of exclusive rights protected under copyright law and other intellectual property rights in many motion pictures and television programs, including the title(s) listed below (the NBC Universal Properties). NBC Universal diligently enforces its rights in its motion pictures.

wait wait wait, it's a bad thing when the government catches you for doing something illegal? Is it also wrong for the police to come in my house after I steal shit at a store?
If they do it by infiltrating your computer it's one thing, but the way they find out their info is not like that at all.

If you do something illegal, don't be pissed off when you get caught.
