I am not sure if this should be in the new video game forum or the technical support section. I just recently got an xbox360, it was in August right before the 60 gig version came out. It is one of the latest versions of the 20gig 360's with the HDMI out and the newer chipset in it. Yesterday I was playing Gears of War and I paused the game to go to the bathroom, when I came back the front was flashing with the red rings.
It totally freaked me out and I thought my 360 was dead but I hit the power button and reset it and it seems to be working fine now. My question is are the RRoD a sure sign that my 360 is dying? Do the red rings show up for other reasons than the infamous RRoD problem everyone had with launch systems? Are the red rings a universal error thing so if there was a software error or something else would they show up? I appreciate any info anyone has on the red rings.

Depends on what quadrants are flashing. All 4 mean cables aren't plugged in properly, the 2 left quadrants mean it's just overheating, etc. I got all but the top right one flashing last month which is usually the "you're fucked" RRoD, but it's been working fine since, I'm not sure if it's on it's way out or not really, but it seems there's no sure fire way to tell if it's going or not.

Answer: You bought the wrong system.
Kidding, kidding. But in all seriousness, it's like Kiara said, there's no surefire way to tell. When I did have a 360, it randomly had the 3 lights that signified the RROD light up here and there, and it'd go away on a reset. If it serves as an answer, of the 3 360's I went through in 2ish years, every one showed those lights about 2-6 months before it kicked the bucket for good. It's not a telltale sign, but in my experience, if you see those lights at any point, the system is in trouble. My best advice would be to make sure your system has adequate ventilation, electricity and the whole nine yards wherever it's set up. If everything is optimal, the best thing you can do is just cross your fingers.

Thanks for the quick replies. Three lights were flashing red the only one that was not was the upper left hand light. The 360 has great ventilation and is sitting on glass shelf and its quite cold in my house right now.
I have played it for hours on end before without any issues so this really surprised me.

The RROD can signify any number of critical hardware failures, so it's not just overheating that can cause it to do it. Sometimes if the alignment of the planets and stars just isn't perfect and the light of saturn isn't shining on your prime star in the proper phase of the lunar calendar, it'll kick the bucket.

Apparently there isn't a RRoD where the top left isn't lit up, sure it wasn't the top right that wasn't lit? Either way, if it does it again that page might have a couple of solutions that'll help.

Thanks. I could be mistaken but I am almost positive it was three rings with the upper left not lit up, though since the light bleeds over it could have been just two of the rings lit up which as you said would be caused by overheating. I am going to go home and play it tonight and see if the issue shows up again maybe it was just a fluke and it will be ok.

If it RROD'd once and went away, it will most likely come back.
I've had the same thing a few weeks ago... just keep playing it until it's permanent and then send it in. The next time you have an error, check the error number... what you do is, with the red light/lights flashing, you hold down the upsync button, and then press the eject button... a number will flash (if all 4 are flashing the number is 0).. do this 4 times (keep holding down the sync button and then just press the eject button 4 times to see the numbers), and by that error number you can make out the problem. |

On my 360 Elite I have a general hardware failure problem caused by an accelerometer in my dvd drive. Hell, sometimes it even plays while red ringing, so the RRoD isn't a sure sign of console failure.
