Switching Pets

So I've gotten kinda tired of my Lv35 pet always gettin low-level people during prime-times and am taking up another for fun. Now I'm getting lots of high-level guys that I'd rather fight with my 35. I keep hearing people mentioning switching pets when they see what they're up against - how do you do this without losing your spot or canceling?

Can't

Basically they cancel.

The only thing I can think of (unless there's some exploit they're using I don't know about).

What they may be refereing to is "Checking your opponent" seeing what it is then pulling the pet and trying a different fight.
