Default Soloing + Epicness

What job, in your opinion, combines soloing with a sense of epicness to the greatest degree? For example, RDM can solo lots of stuff, but it isn't very epic. A RDM/NIN kite-nuking Charybdis is way less epic than a NIN/DNC soloing it head on. Here are some starter jobs that I know are good soloers, feel free to add more if I forgot any (no boring jobs, I don't want to hear about how a RDM with a bedpan computer chair and 6 cans of pringles can solo Genbu with his eyes closed) BTW when I say solo, I mean HNMs, not-quite-HNMs, and quest/missions

NIN/DNC

THF/NIN

PLD/RDM

SAM/DNC

DRG/BLU

I myself love NIN/DNC soloing, and I do it just for fun in my spare time (ffxi can be fun?! I know right~).

How do you think RDM solo NMs that can't be bound or gravitied?

RDM soloing might not be "epic" as you say, but the job does allow for some interesting solos that aren't as publicized as the marathon kites in sky/etc.

For one, I did the Cave Worm NM in Ule. Range as RDM/DRK meleeing once. Fun to tackle its ridiculous regen while maintaining your own life within melee range without shadows for a good 45-60 minutes.

And as for seeing a kite solo and not qualifiying it as "epic"....if you can honestly pull chary up to the pond outside the gold door without dying I give you severe credit, no matter what job you do it on.

Finally- even as a RDM I'm not fond of the "bedpan solos" as the OP puts it. I'd much rather see someone live on the edge like the Gration solo than basically outrun a retarded turtle only to see w. feet and m. hands drop.

Gration is not even close to "living on the edge"...every time I've done it I just get annoyed as hell that I can't kill it faster because of the constant intimidation. Staying alive is not hard at all.

SAM/DNC

has some pretty "epic" solos, none of these are things that haven't been solo'd before, but he does them on SAM/DNC, which in it's self is impressive.

though I don't understand how a rdm's solo's aren't "epic"?

because RDMs aren't weapon skilling in most solos?, we do fight alot of mobs straight face to face. I think alot of people don't get that.

When I saw Rapido solos years ago, and even the latest Suzaku solo, well I shat bricks cause I felt those where pretty epic (and everything inbetween)

A few straight-tanked RDM solo fights are pretty fucking epic, to be honest. Marquis Forneus is probably the most intense fight I've done straight-tanking as RDM/NIN, followed by Rapido I guess. Suzaku looks insanely epic, and whilst Seiryu might not be a tanked fight I can assure you it's probably the most nerve-wracking thing a RDM can attempt. I'm not sure why you seem to be implying that only true melee jobs tanking shit can be considered "epic".

And isn't the word itself actually used to describe things like novels that are enormous in length? So why does a fight being a marathon automatically disqualify it from being "epic", exactly?

How you could possibly consider a melee job spamming <insert defensive ability here> and Curing Waltz II epic is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, melee can solo some impressive targets, but killing that's completely devoid of any trace of intricacy bores the the hell out of me.

Just as well, you seem to have a fairly outdated grasp in regards to what Red Mage is capable of these days. I stopped finding running around Binding shit entertaining a long time ago.

Though, if I had to pick the most 'awesome' of the bunch, I suppose I'd go with PLD.

This. Gold really deserves a lot more recognition than he gets in comparison to people like Avesta. I'd even venture to say that the two solos quoted are more impressive than anything any RDM has ever done.

I've seen the Fenrir bits, but would anyone happen to have a link to the Ash Dragon fight? Sounds interesting.

Why NIN/PUP?

How does /PUP work?

I am serious, I do not know.

Soulsoother is basically a heal bot with infinite mp. As 75 Nin/Pup you would only get cure 3, but you would get infinite cure 3s instead of /dnc that depends on you having tp or /rdm with tiny mp pool. Also Evasion Bonus is nice for Nin though you get it as /Dnc as well.

Uh huh.

Keep explaining please ^^, how does said automaton get infinite MP? I'm now extremely interested/boggled by it. I always see high level PUPs sending away and activating their automaton again, and if I ask why they tell me it's to "refresh their MP".

Well deactivating then reactivating fully recovers mp of auto. You can also give your auto refresh and 2 different types of covert with attachments. Attachments aren't level specific so you can use them at any level pup.

This only works if the auto doesnt take any dmg (AoE etc), else you'd have a timer for reactivataion.

But even if the automaton is damaged, it can still be auto-refreshed/convert, right? (until it gets hit by an inevitable massive AoE).

I can live with that.

SMN can also solo a fair number of NMs. It may not be as action packed as some, but avoiding links/agro while conserving MP and hoping to god that mob doesnt reach between casts adds a certain degree of fun to it.

NIN/PUP Automaton cures don't count as magic aggro so you can get yourself cured without magic aggroing bombs. This is why Gold could truly solo it and someone like Avesta had to have someone watch for bombs for him on RDM/NIN.

I dunno if you could do this NIN/DNC - he did this solo before WotG.

Which is, subsequently, why I'll never have an Ash Dragon under my belt. I don't know anyone who likes me enough to kill my adds for hours. >_>

Even so, aren't Ash Dragon's TP moves deadly? And will probably one shot the automaton (Body Slam...?)

I suppose with full subtle blow + evasion it shouldn't be too bad, but I am really really interested all of a sudden. How long would a NIN/PUP take ... ?

I've soloed bonnacon a few times as nin/thf and sam/nin. He's not that hard, I think he's only like, 64? Snort can be rough to deal with, but I'd just use the Milk that drops off the buffaloes and turn around until you recover.
