Default How much is too* much?

Hey guys, long time reader first time poster. I have played XI for close to 4 or 5 years now, and I do enjoy the game. But there comes a time when you just have to ask yourself, what in the hell type of commitment is Square trying to hold us as players to?

I've leveled multiple jobs to 75, had my fair share of NM, Dynamis, etc. drops. But when I look at my 301 days of playtime (that is actual playtime, I don't leave the game on and am doing something when it is) I sit back and it seems like I should have done more, received more, accomplished more.

I know Final Fantasy XI is a MMORPG, and it does require a time investment. However, what is realistic? I have done many many salvage runs, with a great group of players, we whoop up on the zones. However I have not even had a single piece completed. If I ever did complete a set, I would need to figure out some way to pay the huge price tag on the items to get it anyways. I have been up for Wyrmal Abjuration and Aquarian Abjuration bodies now for close to a year, yet after plenty of Nidhogg / Aspi / Odin kills I have yet to see one drop. You can spend 10,000 BCNM seals on Up In Arms and never see a Kraken Club, and there is certain AFv2 that just never turn up. And relics? Unless you have some sort of major linkshell funding, or got rich back in the day, your SOL.

In the end I want my gear to be the best. I play at a superior level, and try my hardest, but in the end it is possible that however hard you may try, you get nothing in return. It is fine to spend time to get an item, but after a certain period of time it just doesnt matter anymore, and instead of evolving your character you get stuck in a rut, where you only do a few things over and over and over.

I don't want this game to be a second job. Einherjar was a nice move forward, as you are rewarded for your effort in the form of ampoules that you can save towards items, plus you get a shot at some other items mixed in. But we still are left with our regular three 3 hour Ground King camps every day (potential 9 hours of time in hopes of even claiming, let alone getting something. I work less then that at my full time job), a 3 hour Ixion pop, a 4? hour Sandworm pop, a who knows how long KV pop, and thats not even putting other events into the mix (limbus, ein, dyna, salvage, assault, campaign).

It really just seems that unless you are unemployed, retired, rich, or home schooled, you will not have time to experience this game. Maybe I am just writing about reasons I think I should quit, but I want to hear what you guys, the rest of the community thinks about these issues?

Perhaps you shouldn't do every single endgame event if it makes your life miserable. Just a thought.

If you make everything in this game about when you receive a particular item, you will always be disappointed and feel like your time is futile. Better to go with the knowledge you will indeed get it at some point and not really give a shit about it. You'd be a lot happier for it.

With that said, livejournal is that way. --->
